It's the eyes, for sure... Dark brown, smoldering eyes hiding thoughts, the garrison of Garrett, the once pudgy child hidden, lanky now, slow sauntering, secretive. All I know is his name. Dancing crystal light with bright reflections, eyes that are morning and miss nothing come sunnyside up in Joel's joshing. I wonder where the pixie went. He knows, always has but the Viking has arrived. Chartreuse lightning sparks ember and ash. Spitfire: arrival and departure at once. Steven processes with mouth open ~ fingers talking, lips moving, the one who walked before he could creep ~ too high to be earthbound although that's his sign. They come with friends, eyes searching for Grandma's cookie jar. Chocolate chip and peanut butter. Always the eyes, and once... Black polished obsidian they were, dark flint striking merriment throughout a skinny frame beneath raven curls. Young Adonis imp. Only pocketed hands kept blue jeans from falling off, not that it would have bothered him. The dunes and four wheelers drew the boys to the beaches. "Cookies are in the kitchen," I said. Totally unabashed, he fired a kiss to my cheek, hugged me, wrapped a very old soul around me, warp speed. Then gone. His name? Of course! PETER PAN (The last boy was a visitor. He was so full of mirth, I don't think he could harbor a shadow!) |

Margherita, thank you! You make me smile in these wee hours when I should be asleep, but find my thought wandering. I'm glad you enjoyed this. How astounding these young men are, and I can't help wondering where the little ones I knew went! |

Brilliant and descriptive poetry, great write! It's the kind of poem you want to read again, not because it's difficult to comprehend but because it's beautiful. |

Ice, it's always a pleasure to have you visit. Thank you. Jerry, Their toys are just a whole lot more expensive now... but the vitality is sunshine! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Nocturnal Pulse... love that poetic pen name! It's good to take in joy whenever possible and your comment makes my heart smile. Jo, I feel like a raised more than one. First my son, but Steven was here the first year of his life. He's 23 now, and he spent another year or so here not long ago. Garrett stayed one school year. Joel just comes to visit. I love them no matter how they get here. The last boy... dropped out of the blue! |

Fascinating write. You pulled me right into the story. For a moment I was a silly boy again, out front playing tag football with the neighborhood kids and I could hear my mom calling out that she had cookies and lemonade ready when ever we were ready to stop for a while. Enjoyed the read. JL Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. |

Jo, I visit Neverland regularly, especially when my grandkids take time to stop in...exuberant bunch. Not one is into poetry, though, and will probably be surprised some day to discover they inhabit a few lines. I'm glad you found me here again, too. |

Thank you, JL...I am delighted to make your inner child smile! Those days do seem to have flown as I look back -- the carefree times, friends, and summer afternoons/evenings spent just playing. Of course, Mom kept an eye out, and on the cookie jar, too. I think my mom made cinnamon rolls more often, but Grandma often had gingersnaps or sugar cookies and ice cold milk, and she was my introduction to a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, by Mark Twain. Magical combination, cookies and books! It's good that we don't completely loose that child. [This message has been edited by Klassy Lassy (01-09-2012 12:09 AM).] |
