If the starlit heavens darkened, and the sun forgot to shine
And the earth should cease it's turning, and I knew that you were mine
Should the seas the land inundate, And the atmosphere should flee
I'd count it little loss dear, if you still belonged to me.

Though my life should be the forfeit, I'd lay it down with pride
If I but knew that you would mourn for me the day I died.
If I could have a place, my dear, within your heart to stay
Then death would have no fear for me, I'd face it come what may.

Could you kindly reassure me, of your own undying love?
In your voice which is far sweeter than the angels tongues above...
Could you make me feel that special way, that sets my heart aglow?
With your eyes which gleam like jewels, and your smile as white as
snow?

If I had such reassurance, I would joust at dawn with death
And toast your health and beauty, as long as I drew breath...
My heart you'd find as true and blue as any sky above-
You'd bask in adoration, grow giddy from my love.

This is a beautiful tribute to your late wife, John. You actually know, if you allow yourself to think about it deeply enough, that she did and still does love you - otherwise why the not wanting you to be away when you were on the rodeo circuit? It wasn't that she didn't understand that that was who you were/are - it was that she missed you when you were away.

She is now your Guardian Angel and every time you feel the warmth of human kindness, that is her sending it to you, albeit via people still here on Earth.

I can assure you, she loves this exquisite poem and is answering all your questions in exactly the way you both want.

there is such a sweetness in all of this (and Owl's comments surely help with understanding your inspiration), but your last stanza just nails it...love the giddy part

But I can say that you have a unique and impressive way of picking words to describe things.
