![]() (Silent night) Homeless woman, ragged sight. (Holy night) Near froze, beneath a city light. (All is calm) Gold in pockets passing by, (All is Bright) She is homeless, soon to die. (Round yon virgin , mother and child) To hold her close, she has no other. (Holy infant so gentle and mild) Eyes closed, with thoughts of mother (Sleep in heavenly peace) On this night was Christ the child (Sleep in heavenly peace) Born to Mary meek and mild, (Silent night) For this wretch, relief to send? (Holy Night) Or did he leave that work for men? note: Poems can bring up sad, as well as happy images, especially when Christmas is near. The image of sadness is present yearround in the minds of the homeless,..I think of homeless women first, I am a sexist in that way...I want to help them, but all I can do is write about them....with as much emotional expression as I can muster. |

Ice, thank you for this. Humanity is never all butterflies and rainbows, unfortunately, especially during the holidays. It takes poignant reminders such as these to bring that message home. We're all on this rock together... |

A terrible situation in many cases. This just screams for the government to step in and help this woman and those like her. But no, they are too busy handing out welfare checks to woman who have babies year in and year out every year, the crackheads who walk our streets and outher misfits. People such as this woman are the truly needed in this country, but like the well-heeled in this picture, the government turns a blind eye. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Thank you Nicole, and Jerry...for reading and your comments. The picture is where my inspiration for this poem came from. The woman seems to be just staring --out into another existence...the graffiti sums up her being...red, cold hands and cold nose. Does she have but one shoe? Why is she not wearing it...The red high heels...why do they bother me...the Guy carries what seems to be a laptop..and yet she must pander for survival, dreaming only of a warm meal. A silent night indeed for this woman.. The holy child screams within us all to rescue her.. |

Wow... this stops you dead in your tracks. In this time of giving, there are so many who have nothing and will receive nothing that some of us seem to notice for the very first time, though they have always been there, and always will be. Makes me cringe to think of how little I've done for them. Thank you for this poignant reminder. Michael |

Yes, this is a very poignant reminder, written with your compassionate heart ink, dear Ford. There is such a gap between the rich and the poor and it is a shame that societies can't build a juster world. There are so many organizations and volunteers across the world who reach out to these poor people, but if governments won't change their politics, this tragic situation will not improve. It is a very complex problem ... Thank you for sharing your heart and your beautiful poetic skills with us. Emotions cry out for solutions. That's the Poet's task! Margherita ![]() |

you're so right - this is a reminder to all of us that not everyone will be tucked up in their cozy beds all excited about Christmas morn & that what we take for granted & get stressed about in the lead up is so trivial really. Well penned! Love is the life of the soul... |

JL, Margherita, Michael, Tracie Thank you for reading, and thoughtful comments. I believe "he" does leave it to us to help the unfortunate...no matter what the antiprogressives think. |

I've whined a bit this morning because I fell, got banged up a bit and soaking wet... you've made me remember how lucky I am. I've thought of what I'm missing... you remind me to be grateful for what I have. I long for someone special... when there's something special in everyone. Basically... I read your words and count my blessings... and thank you. |
