alone's shadow haunts
creeps and slithers within my
eternal soul for succor
that I cannot give him
I wish for alone's shadow
to go away
he's not needed anymore
since her
alone's shadow doesn't understand
has trouble with the concept
of being alone, alone
sad really
alone's shadow has been beside me
for all these years
he was much needed
in those days
without alone's shadow
I don't care to surmise what might have happened
but he was there
a cold comfort
for a shadow cannot radiate heat
either physically or spiritually
all it can do
is assure you that you aren't completely alone
though I've had alone's shadow
with me a long time
I have no need for him now
I have her
the hours when she and I are not in touch
alone's shadow thinks he sees a chance
to be redeemed
to come back to the only home he's ever known
not possible
I refuse him
I do believe I heard him curse recently
that worries me
all these years I've not heard a peep out of him
he was . . . just there
I realized one day
he was becoming a nuisance
hovering around as he was wont to do
he was doing more harm
than good
he didn't do anything
except remind me that I was alone
I began to disrespect him
I know that had to hurt
can shadows hurt
I think mine can
still . . .
even if she hadn't appeared in my life
I wanted him to leave me
how do you make your shadow leave
the problem
was gigantic and was driving me crazy
couldn't kill him
because, when it was all said and done
alone's shadow
is me, my inner self
she solved my problem
enter her, depart alone's shadow
simple
will he ever come back is the question
the answer is too horrible to even think about

"all it can do
is assure you that you aren't completely alone"

You know, this really reached out and grabbed me.  For me, it's a two-edged sword...railing against alone, and pulling it closer like a child would a blanket.

a most haunting state we all do feel at times that seems to choose us when we are
most vulnerable
the poem relates on a human level to all

Yes, EmmaRose, the Alone's Shadow does seem to seek us out when our defenses are down and we can't reject it. Thank you for your kind words.

Though the theme is very serious and melancholic, I think your approach to your "Alone's Shadow" is simply fantastic, dear Jerry.

A reassurance of some kind, provided by your own defense system. Excellent work.

Love,
Margherita

Incredible writing! I love the feel of lovecraftian despair mixed with a pinch of Poe... My fave form of poetry, Dark and Deep...

Kind Regards,

Margherita, your comments are so very kind, and I thank you deeply for them. Yes, indeed, we do construct our own inner defenses when we are left naked and alone in the world.

<><>

Coming from you that is high praise, jwesley, and I very much appreciate it.

Thank you, Jean-Phillippe!, for reading and commenting on my poetry, it means a lot.

The read was interesting.
Problem solved?
I hope so, Jerry.
Take care!!
