.

At some point
You don’t need
A bottle
A pack of cigarettes
A bus or a rock
Falling out of the sky

Who knew
Did you hear
Who could imagine
I guess in the end
It was just his time

There’s eventually
No need for Nazis
Commies or Viet Cong

All the doughty men
Gather for a final frightening
Each to the front
With no return

The winter snow
Comes sifting down
On a heap of dirt
The hole that wants
Its filling in

Another generation
Of mourners
Waiting in line

Regardless
Of how or why

I guess even heroes have an ending. Sombre poem.

A poet must leave traces of his passing not proof.
