"I confess, it is my nature's plague
To spy into abuses, and oft my jealousy
Shapes faults that are not."
William Shakespeare from "Othello" (3.3.168-70)
--------------------------------------------------

Perhaps a form of envy, jealousy is?:

A half century gone
But time sealed in black and white
Moves something through
My eyes to mind
In rusty cars, of fixed reveal.
.
I have never felt this way:
.

But actions by the heart and mind
This time make logic disappear,
As now I find that reasons,
In their purest art,
Can be without restrain
Of what is reasonable.
.
Something dark has risen
From the place
That shades my spirit light
But cost to flame
Is only partial quench;
.
The fires not been fully lost.
.
And so I ask myself the final price,
Of hanging on to nothing-query
How to gain a profit,
From what seems a heavy loss?
.
A bit of tarnish dull
Takes little from the shine of gold
And yet
The  bards words show me same
I must admit, as many men
Who feel, or felt
The press of something sharp
Rising from their throats
Have felt
The blade edge cuts, unclean
From the jagged metal edges
Of this evil greeneyed  blade.
.
Like those , I am
We gritty louts,
Who subject selves
To fits and furies,
Shaping faults
That our lovers
Sure have not.

GREAT quote from the bard, Ice. Your poem speaks to most of us guys (women too). Where there is passion so strong that the mere fact that she has brushed by, or leaned into another to speak can be the catalyst that propels pure hell being delivered to the astonished, and innocent woman. And that is the beginning of a rocky road to walk. Green-eyed monster, indeed!

Astutely written with such introspective.
Understanding of that emotion
at the time it crops up is difficult
even at its vertex,
but you have painted jealousy well here.

Enjoyed the read, my friend.

oh..that green eyed monster!

what a pest~

One of the best essays I have ever read on the green-eyed bugger was written by Emma Goldman. Circa 1912..."Jealousy:Causes and a Probable Cure"  ~it's brilliant, really...she says something like:

quote:
All lovers do well to leave the doors of their love wide open. When love can go and come without fear of meeting a watchdog, jealousy will rarely take root because it will soon learn that where there are no locks and keys there is no place for suspicion and distrust, two elements upon which jealousy thrives and prospers

there's the trick, no?
I love how you invoke the Master in this....truly great craftsmanship, iceman...deep breaths, my dear

Just so, dear Ford! This is truly an exceptionally accurate rendering of that green-eyed monster, the jealousy.

Very few people I think are completely immune to jealousy, it must be the most enlightened ones, those who love unconditionally.

Great reminder, that this is a lesson to learn and relearn as long as we live.

Great work.

J.P.
Your take on the poem is both inteligent , and true..
I didn't know you were a pointy headed intelectual,
although what you wrote makes me think you are.
Thanks for the reply.

The metaphor you quoted was very hard for me to write, but it looks like I succeded
in getting my point across.
Thank you for the comments...they mean a lot.

Thank you for your comments...
I found Emma Goldmans essay, and read it.
A wonderful take on the subject of jealousy.

"The popular notion is that jealousy is inborn and therefore can never be eradicated
from the human heart. This idea is a convenient excuse for those who lack ability
and willingness to delve into cause and effect."

I am most certainly interested in its "cause and effect"

What I have written about here is  jealousy, but in a different form
A form that I cannot find right title to.
The little animal is unnamed, as far as I know.

It is more a feeling, that comes and goes, without being expected.
Or raises its head, by due circumstance...

A person walks by that reminds you of your lovers former lover.

Or sometimes it might be just an image "sealed in black and white" that you come across,
that causes  discomfort..a little shudder, or maybe a big one..
When you think about the two in the photograph, billing and cooing.

"actions by the heart and mind"...."make logic disappear."

Thank you for reading, and the reply.."enjoyed"
is a very nice compliment.

It might take a lifetime, but I won't give up on the lessons.

Ohhh!  I love emerald fire, because if love had a color it should be green, but this is something else again.  I  read the poem several time.  Jealousy is so much worse than envy because it makes a slave of innocence, and kills the messenger.  Great poetic discussion of a classic dark emotion!

Enjoyed your poem, Ice. So thought provoking.
I too would be interested in it's cause and effect.
