Davy Jone’s Locker
copyright Linda L. Dowd

Lashed by winds, I sailed seething seas
with an iron-clad grip at the wheel.
Nor’westers were wailing and flanking all sides,
as the ship was tossed without keel.

Roiling waves crashed over the gunnels,
spinning whaler in unending turn.
Buffeted by seas and gale-force winds
~ I knew not the bow from the stern.

The vessel listed and slipped into the sea
~ I was headed for a watery grave.
Deeper, and deeper ~ and deeper I sank
to be greeted by sea devil, Dave.

He had rows of teeth and sinister eyes.
Wriggling tentacles circled his head.
One swift blow from his mighty horned tail
and forthwith, his victims were dead.

In booming voice, he proclaimed me his own.
Waters churned in the wake of his roar.
My soul was his to the end of time
and I feared what might lie in store.

Shipwrecks were scattered along ocean floor
~ all about lay gold, jewels, and bones.
Drunk sailors and pirates had met their fate
in the Locker of ole Davy Jones.

Davy presides over lost souls in the sea
~ each storm adds more flock to his fold.
Seafarers dare not mention his name
for misfortune would befall the so bold.

As I sought to escape this watery grave
I soon spotted a gold skeleton key.
Festooned with jewels ~ ever so rare,
it sparkled on the floor of the sea.

It opened the gates to fair Fiddler’s Green
where spirits of good sailors roam free.
Legends do tell ~ that to escape from sea hell,
one must find the Fiddler’s jewelled key.

As the sea devil gathered his victims,
~ new members for his ghoulish crew,
I scooped up the key with a sleight-of-hand
and hid it from Ole Davy's view.

As I searched for the gateway of legends
that lead to the good sailors’ heaven,
I spotted a door ~ ‘twixt two sunken ships
~ from which hung a lucky brass seven!

I wended my way past circling sharks
~ stepping over the scattered bones and debris.
Anchors once raised with a “Ship ahoy, mate!”
were now buried beneath bed of sea.

As I reached the gate, I pulled out the key
and heard a demonic roar.
I was wracked with fear and shaking so bad
that I dropped the key to sea floor.

With a trembling hand I swept it up
then inserted it into the lock.
I swung the door wide and rushed inside
~ then against it I shoved a big rock.

I entered a tunnel of swirling gray mist
with a glowing, soft light at far end.
Each step I made took me further away
from the roar behind the grand bend.

As I neared the light in the distance,
scented grasses sweetened the air.
I was filled with anticipation
at whatever might lie beyond there.

An Eden lay resplendent before me.
~ The fairest meadows that I’d ever seen.
I‘d finally found the good sailors’ heaven
for before me lay fair Fiddler’s Green.

Davey Jones must have been off his rocker
To have let you escape from his watery locker.
He would rather have you than all the rest
With the fortune you have in your huge treasure chest!

But his loss is our gain at the Fiddler's Green
And we'll fiddle 'til dawn, if you know what I mean.
You'll sit as my queen and I'll be the Pharoah.
This I swear by Neptune or my name ain't Jack Sparrow!

Lotsa fun, Angel

Whoa! Whot a ride, Linda. I was caught up in the drama at the bottom of Davy Jones; locker, and happily it all came to naught for the golden key you did find. Good ending . . .

And I began to inhale this air together with you, after I had held my breath through the incredibly vivid adventure you shared so masterfully here, dear Linda!

Powerful and thought provoking. There are traps on the path through life and we become aware of having been caught unshielded sometimes only in extremis.

Wow!

Love you,
Margherita

ps very enjoyable also Balladeer's response!

Balla-Dear ~

You honor me, my benevolent Pharoah!
You're a better man than that Jack Sparrow!
I'll fiddle with you on the Green
~ forever as your devoted queen.
Because you rise above the best,
I shall bare the treasures of my chest!

Love,
Queen Nefer-titty

JL ~

Thank you! I wrote this a few years ago but was never satisfied with it. It was rather difficult to write and I just couldn't get it to read smoothly. When I came across it again, I thought I'd take another 'stab' at it and I do believe that it is much improved.
I'll probably try to improve it even more the next time I visit this poem some time in the future! lol At some point, I should be able to get this write right! lol

Cheers and a ho ho ho and a bottle of rum!

May your seas be calm as you sail through life!

Margherita ~ my dear Dolphina,

I was smiling all the while I was reading your response to my adventure poem. You do have a way of responding to my poetry that makes my face blush and my heart smile. Thank you, spirit sister.

Oh the adventuresome travels of a swashbuckling  poet princess! Your narrow escape, had me on the edge of my chair until the very end.

When I was young, I moved to a small coastal village.  I always wondered about the stories of Davy Jones Locker.  We had a small grocery and cannery there by that name.  Strange that I didn't ask my uncle about it then.  He loved telling tales and he always rooted for the underdog.  If he could leave you with goosebumps in the telling, all the better!  You do that, too.

However, I think our Balladeer would be quite happy on the sailors' green... He'd be busy turning it into a golf course.

Fascinating tale, Linda and I loved Balladeer's comment as well. I think you are too much woman for Jack Sparrow but Balladeer sounds like a match.
