Hope

Am I not done?  What is this feeling –
This doubt come upon me today?
When yesterday, all life was reeling,
And all caring had passed away.
Whose voice is that in the wind calling?
Dare I find peace in her soft tone?
When, finally I’d accepted falling,
And tortures of this life, alone.

What is this life, this emotion
Stirring the soul I left for dead,
And breaking the utter devotion
To Darkness I so aptly wed?
What are these thoughts, invading mind,
That threaten yet to steal my sleep?
As if Worry were so inclined
To pull me from that haunted keep.

Oh, shall I trust to dream of this,
That damnation squeal with glee?
To offer yet another kiss –
To curse the soul that blesses me?
How would I revel in such splendor?
Could I face you, look in your eyes?
‘Er bring myself to surrender
To a feeling I know but lies?

With eyebrow raised, conclusion drawn,
Ambition marred and dream dismayed;
Shall I yet dare to wish upon
Tomorrow, scarred by love unbade?
No promise – no virtue foretelling,
And no compassion for the weak;
The misery but in a telling
This graveyard poet ne’er ‘gain shall speak.

Hope has some formidable opponents... but she's not as fragile as she looks... and is perfectly willing to call on her pals Peace and Faith so she's not elbowed aside by Misery, Despair, Worry and the rest of that gang of hangers-on. *S*

This is absolutely wonderful... I love it in spite of the fact that last line shoved Worry right from the battleground over to my mind. LOL

FIne writing, Michael.

They say hope springs eternal, or is that infernal? Who knows? All I know is that there's something deep inside of us that will not be extinguished, no matter how hard we try to put it out. For as long as there is life within us, we can't quit or stop trying.

Hope is a promise given to us all, but not hope in worldly things, but of heavenly things instead.  Faith in that hope is all we need.

You expressed your thoughts very well.
Enjoyed the read.

How intensely beautiful, dear Michael! "What feeling is this?" It's that feeling that makes one experience Spring, when you watch a snowdrop piercing through the snow ... it's when the call of the sun is stronger than any darkness that grips us.

Much enjoyed your moment of "giving in to Hope"!

Love,
Margherita

Ruth, I didn’t say I would never speak again… just not of hope… lol.  No worries, the triplets, Misery, Worry and Despair should keep me busy writing for many eons.

Balladeer, true words my friend.  And I believe it is “eternal” although I have tried to convince myself otherwise on many occasions.

JL, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”  2Cor 4:18.  Indeed, that is where our hope should be.

Tracie, and thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed.

Hey Nan, good to see you!  I believe happiness is much dependant upon perception…  my glass is clear at the moment.  Hope yours is as well.

Margherita, though I was not sure I was giving in when I wrote this, the feeling has not escaped me… Maybe I was just flat out conquered.  Either way, there’s far more abysmal emotions I could be sharing my time with, and am quite happy not to be, all the same.  I’m glad you enjoyed the struggle.

a heart
how it feels like a leaping thing
tremored in the palm of this night,
where i wear your lines around
the nape of my neck;
a feathered sweep of seasons
i hold this time like waves,
and ride the current
you set beneath my feet

  There is always hope

It is not in my nature to not believe in more.

To grieve, yes, but hope is the rope that pulls you from the well of grief, and only you can untie it from around your soul.

And one who can do that never lived anyway.

And here you have the gal with the
rose colored glasses, her father's own
very named Sunshine; yet once called
by her own mother, "Pollyanna" reading
this dark, however beautiful piece of
writing...

Michael...oh Michael...you have taught me
to look at the dark side of misery and to
embrace what could be...[even while knowing
I've known my own, just never put word to
that embrace...]

and you've even given me more insight than
I could ask for....

and for that, I thank you.

A very good subject for the classical form..
Your method of delivery has done justice to it.  Fine work, Michael.

This thing called hope, this "thing with feathers" can never be overwritten as a theme.

enjoyed

Nicole, you have made me feel that “hope”.  I can’t thank you enough for that.

Jwesley, interesting thoughts, there.  I “hope” I will aspire to live after reading them… lol  Thank you so much.

Sunshine, you depict the light for me as well as I may depict the dark for you… and while I don’t really know what dark insights you might glean from me, you have always given me clear reasons to look toward happiness and embrace what is, rather than mourn what is not.  I may not show it in my writing, but I do cherish that in you.  Thank you.

Ice… yeah, those are some pretty strong feathers… I do not stand a chance in fighting them, really.  Thank you, Sir.

This one is too well done!  I really think I have to find you a girl Michael   Hope springs eternal, you know that right?

Wow, I just noticed the new picture Michael, where on earth does time go? He is now a man!
