Trade Winds Blowing

"Between the bamboos tall
the moonlight softly trickles,
and I hear the cuckoos call."...
"Bamboos in the Moonlight"

a poem by Basho (1643-1694)
From the book "Little Pictures of
Japan/My Travelship/1952/pg.40

You may ask me
why am I here
among the bamboos
in the moonlight
and I would reply;
to rest my mind
to soothe my soul
to hear the sweet
sounds of bamboo
as trade winds blow...
"Trade Winds Blowing"

Good takeoff of the original Basho poem . . .
