When your back is against the wall
They offer you a cigarette
you give them a nasty sneer
spit'n their eye, ask for beer

Though your life is through you try
To give unto yourself some pride
          there's nothing left to say
you had a pair, they had a trey

As you wait for the blindfold
You try to remember what counts
was it the good in you
          is that your legacy true

Or is the badman your fortè
Whose skills you perfected well
it matters not at this point
only wish you had a joint

Mortality hovers 'round
With your back against the wall
          you have no redeeming thoughts
you're just sorry you got caught

Moments before your head explodes
You spy an olive-skinned woman
          running to stop the slaughter
Oh, Nanette, why do you bother?

Nanette bothered out of love and dedication surely ... a noble heart, that must have felt like a rose in the desert.

Powerful write, dear Jerry! Your pen knows of the harshness of some realities and renders them remarkably well.

Love,
Margherita

Through it all, Jerry love comes through for you...you are worth it even if you don't feel like it sometimes.  I admire your ability to put your gritty guts out there.

As you wait for the blindfold
You try to remember what counts

She bothered because she remembered... and because you were worth the effort.

Oh, thank you suthern, your words give me a peace tonight that sometimes I don't feel I deserve. Thank you for believing that I do.
