I was sitting by the pool
late nineteen sixties
Crystal Apartments not far
from downtown L.A.

headphones on, jamming listening to

DOA by Bloodrock
the night you made your presence known
to me
walked by gracefully, brown eyes so serious

I was taken by your unpretentiousness

in a place driven by cool
you were simply Nanette from Long Island
Flushing, not far from Shea Stadium
your simplicity touched me

stood out among the freaks of the nineteen sixties

across the pool you sat
observing the ongoing drama
at Cecil's and Casey's Caligula-themed party
a band was playing

awful, hence the earphones and Bloodrock

I watched you watching the craziness
around us
not judgmental, no
but not joining in the insanity either

a tentative Mona Lisa smile creased your mouth

a private joke
you made up as you watched
the carryings-on
of the pseudo hippies getting down

I was, quite simply, beguiled

when you allowed a broad smile to manifest itself
when your eyes met mine
I went to you
you looked away, but kept the smile

sanity at a Mad Hatters Tea Party

that then, was the beginning
of Jerry and Nanette
and laughter
and tears, ah that is for sure

this is not about tears however

these words are about love
expectations
making each other smile at nothing
just because we were together

this poem has no time for tears and sadness

no, this poem is about . . .
Oh yes, I'm afraid sadness has a place at the table
I cannot write about that special person
without sadness creeping in

can't be done

still, the sadness will never obliterate what we had
for awhile
it can never destroy our love
together we were one

I remember your love

So very true... at first, the sadness seems to be all that remains, but eventually we're able to again see the love... and hold onto that.

Bitter-sweet.  Enjoyed the story, Jerry.
Excellent, excellent.

This is exquisite, dear Jerry.

Very poignant reminiscing, really.

. . . and very true, Margherita.

Thank you for your kindness, Nanette does also, I am sure.
