Cold and Numb

So tired of the daily rat races,
Tired of the looks on all their faces.
I’ll never get past the things I’ve done,
No matter how far or fast I run.
You keep playing when all else is lost,
Sooner or later you pay the cost.
When there’s nothing left worth running from,
You find the chase leaves you cold and numb.

So you spend your life in shallow places,
Never filling the empty spaces.
Never taking root, easily pulled.
In the end it’s but yourself you’ve fooled.
And they say we have a destiny,
But I hear nothing calling to me.
In the mirror I see what I’ve become,
And I turn away, cold and numb.

I once thought I had a good life,
Even now, I still miss my wife.
But God tells me to play this hand,
Whether or not I understand.
So I wake to this empty bed,
The voices in my head well fed;
With dreams I’m not some worthless bum
Standing next ‘this trash heap cold and numb.

But those sweet dreams don’t hold for me
The forgiveness I may never see.
The past I bear now, like a brand,
If but to meet scrutiny’s demand.
Still, I’ll finish life the best I can –
Let God judge the merit of this man,
For in the end, the tallied sum
Just might find us all cold and numb.

Still, I pray to God that we might meet,
Another time – a far better street.
In a world not judged by suit and tie,
Where we can look each other in the eye –
Know you’re not the best, I’m not the worst,
And it don’t matter who got here first…
When heaven opens up and all see Him come,
Never again to be cold and numb.

"I’ll never get past the things I’ve done,
No matter how far or fast I run."

You need to staple these words inside your thought process, Michael. So stop your running. Look around. Smile at a pretty girl. Tickle a baby to hear it giggle. It really is as simple as that.

Love that last line!
Beautiful write.

A life bereft, a world so bleak... you paint it so vividly it reaches through the screen and takes my breath!

Still, I’ll finish life the best I can –
Let God judge the merit of this man,
For in the end, the tallied sum
Just might find us all cold and numb.

I've no doubt that when God's doing the judging, you'll feel the shining warmth and welcome of His loving arms... just wish your mirror was kinder to you now. *S* Magnificent poem!!

Let God judge the merit of this man,

He does not judge you, he LOVES you.

Cold and numb is terrible and you express it very convincingly. Our destiny is the grand divine design of INFINITE HARMONY, as you well know. Though none of our feelings is ever wasted, we have the power to rise above them and feel the warmth of the all permeating divine presence.
