Listening to every heart

What Was - Transcends

“Merry Christmas, Karilea!
May Rilke continue to inspire you
through the coming year as he did
before you even knew his name.
                               With love,
                                            Louise
                                    Christmas, 2009”

A script so fine within the cover of
A Year With Rilke,
a book of poems for all days
of any given year, so I kept it for 2010,
a daily read of his diary,
perchance with insights of a German poet
to whom I had been introduced, after
my own writings of
“Excerpts from ‘To a Poet, 1-5’ ”

I had never read Rilke, never knew him
until a reader said that I reminded him
of Marie Rainer, so I searched.

Inspired, I wrote.

~*~

Then 2010 was a deciding year,
a year of letting go and taking on ~
as I began the daily read, one poem a day,
following the diarist gist and
not jumping ahead, I note bookmarks
placed in months March, April, May
when I stopped reading, apparently,

because the friend who had provided the gift
now needed the gift of a friend, someone
who could be there on call, as required,
to provide whatever could be given.

~*~

There are moments in a day when you
just listen to something inward,
and this day, I picked up Rilke,
flipped pages to what would have been
my readings back to
September 3, 2010…

I found Orpheus, Eurydice, Hermes (1)
And on subsequent dates, (2) (3) (4) & (5) through
September 7.

I wasn’t meant to read them, nor
the entry on September 8
To Be Patient with Sadness from Rilke’s
Letters to a Young Poet
back then, on those exact dates.

No, it was not meant for me to find them then,
not until this week, this day, this time,
when I can comprehend and understand
that while one poet likened me
to the man,

I never really knew what he saw
until today.

Now it is my prayer
that I might always manifest
a revelation
within a reader’s
heart
as I continue to learn
to understand
to comprehend
to love.

And as I write this, I yet again
thank a woman whose encouragement
will ever remain a standard of write.

But you did, maybe coincidently, or maybe your subconscious gently ever reminding you in a whisper until you made the re-connection.
Excellent write Sunshine.

Sometimes, most of the time, people can see in us things that we never expected to hear and never dreamed of being.

Karilea, not able to collect my thoughts to think or say anything meaningful right now - just that your poem has me in floods of tears for multiple reasons, some of which I probably could identify if I could collect my thoughts, and probably some of which I couldn't.

Will make the time to come back a second time and offer you more than

tears

“Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depth of your heart; confess to yourself you would have to die if you were forbidden to write.”
¯ Rainer Maria Rilke

And here is an example of that dire need to write..

Indeed "what was, transcends"

The reasons that command you to write are obvious, all one has to do is read this poem
to see those reasons. Rilke would approve..:-)

There are moments in a day when you
just listen to something inward,

And when something fine and wonderful happens, unasked questions are answered. *S* This warms the heart! *S*

A treasure that was, in its giving, a treasure.  A double blessing if you will.  I have never read Rilke and, after witnessing your appreciation for him, am not sure I should.  I say this not cynically.  It’s not that I doubt my appreciation for him could match yours… but that I doubt my appreciation for him could match my appreciation for you appreciating him here.  This, to me, is a treasure.

~ Oh, Karilea, your prayer has been answered as have the prayers of your avid readers.
