The Trigger Effect

I’ve never really understood
What motivates me to write.
It’s more than words, perchance, I hear
Or an awe-inspiring site.
It comes upon me like a flashback –
Sets me before a blank page…
As my eyes open wide in wonder,
And the world becomes my stage.

I can see myself in other’s faces,
Their thoughts are mine to ascertain.
Their feelings reach the depths of my soul,
I know and understand their pain.
Am I living other people’s lives,
Or remembering past lives of my own?
For in crystal clear memory,
I walk in worlds I’ve never known.

Passion cries out for expression,
And understanding before all men…
As without ever seeing the written words,
Another presence seems to push my pen.
I become the tear cried in darkness.
I become the joy of childhood fantasy.
I become the scourge of anger.
I become the kiss of ecstasy.

Exasperated, when all is over
I often ponder creation of the piece,
And realize I’m but a tool
That brings emotion sweet release.
As the very trigger of the poem
Disappears just as fast as it came,
I only hope I’ve brought justice
To faces filed away without name.

Michael Anderson

I could not love except where Death
Was mingling his with Beauty’s breath —
Or Hymen, Time, and Destiny
Were stalking between her and me

"I’ve never really understood
What motivates me to write."

Well, the motivations look good on you, wear them with pride.  You are a talented poet for sure.

You've just written for all artists!

Michael...Sunshine said it best.
Some say writing has a purpose, but I believe that purpose isn't revealed until the writing is done and someone relates to it.
I know not where my poems come from as you but I sure wish I could start writing again.

As always thought provoking poem. Greatly enjoyed...Paul

Lori, Glad you enjoyed.

JP, that’s when you gather all the scraps together and make a goulash poem.

JL, thank you for the kind words.

K, I truly don’t think I am speaking for “all” artists here… but for those who I am, I only hope I am doing right by them.  Those who are moved to write sure shine.

Paul, I would very much like to see some new poetry from you.  Email me if you like, and maybe I can come up with a couple of good challenge phrases to spark your muse.

Ruth, it brings me great pleasure to share it with you.

Michael,

I am glad that you have returned to PiP to write and share with us again.  I have read your poems in the archives, but this is so much better - to have you among us on the pages today.
