Hell

I walk the silent riddle
Of a long forgotten song,
Caught somewhere in the middle
Of right and what once seemed wrong.
The taint is all around me,
Cursed without – and cursed within!
The darkness may confound me,
But light alone reveals my sin.

For joy is but a vapid thing,
Challenged in my belief.
Still, in the end angels will sing,
If only of my grief.
I stand an emptied man, a shell,
Small price for dignity;
Privy unto the private hell
Of the man I once thought me.

I wish I could just walk away,
Or at least close these eyes.
There’s nothing left that I could say
That would be more than lies.
I gave my all – I paid the price…
And none of it for show,
But know for you that won’t suffice…
The kick before I go.

Feigned affection – the afterthought,
Somehow still bittersweet.
I trade my health for life in rot –
My suffering complete…
And close my eyes to pilfered trust,
That Death adorn these walls…
But stand to breathe the silken dust,
And march these endless halls.

But dreams — of those who dream as I,
Aspiringly, are damned, and die

Speaking of someone who writes dark, forlorn poetry, you claim the prize, and I thought I was good until I ran into you.

((((This is a response to your comment on my "Maudlin" poem, Michael, nothing personal.)))

You are very good at it JP... as well as nostalgia, and even the mushy stuff.  Personal or not, I would not take offence... dark poetry is my forte.     It’s where I belong.

Truly you have described hell... in all its endless infamy. *S* Each verse is descent to another level of hopelessness... A superbly gripping write!!

Michael...Your heart bleeds when you write like this. Maybe i'm crazy, but I can relate to your poetry like you wouldn't believe. You really put your feelings into each poem.

You are a great poet but I would love to see you write blues songs so juur soul could bleed as well as your heart...Paul

I think that no one is immune to such a state of mind. Personally I prefer to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, but I sure know of darkness. Your poetic rendering of the self inflicted hell is impressive and your skills are stunning.

I'd much rather read your poem about it than visit the Hell you describe.
Excellent
Enjoyed

Lori, well, misery loves company… through me something dark would ya?

Ruth, this was written while going through my divorce with my first wife, and suffering from a life-threatening illness that eventually claimed my left lung.  I waited patiently for death in those days, but when he never showed, I just sort of figured I was already in hell.  I saw this while sorting through all  my old work… thought it worthy of the post.

Jwesley, I’ll let you get away with it this time…

Paul, love of music is what started me writing.  I’m a bit malnourished when it comes to the blues genre, however.  Maybe I will pick some up and see what I discover.  Any suggestions?

Margherita, Indeed… there is always the Light.  He has always seen me through, even in the bleakest of times.

Rex, nice to see you poking your head in here.  Yup, my poetry is kinda like that… a nice place to visit, but absolutely no one in their right mind would want to go there.  I’m glad you enjoyed.  Let’s see some more posts from you soon, ok?

"The darkness may confound me,
But light alone reveals my sin."

If there is any hope at all, it is in this line.  It's what you do after that revelation.

Enjoyed.

Oh, dear Michael, I too, know where of you speak! Thank goodness we rose from the darkness and into the Light! What a poet! I believe the more experiences we have ~ either good, bad, or in between ~ all are grist for the poetic mill, so to speak!

You know beyond the misery of hell that you write of - I loved reading this poem out loud to myself.  It flows beautifully and you use words so darn well.

A keeper, Michael.

Ah, I feel like Ichabod Crane in reading this…  You have captured all of October’s wickedness here.  Everything present serving only to make you dread what may yet be coming.

Well done.
