The love-struck poet scribbled out his days, Yea! And into old age did his pen leak, Sonnets, pure of love to a lovely maid; She read them for amusement; not critique. She was the fairest daughter of Runyon, Her beauty unmatched by Heaven's seraph, The bard wrote on and she read them for fun, Til she was bequeathed to the vile sheriff. Upon her wedding night he took her cruel, A mean, evil man and hated by all. A prisoner in the castle he ruled, Each night he had her hard in a small stall. Her comfort was the poet's words he writ, They were with her under the sheriff's submit. ©October 15, 2011 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~* The saddest words of tongue or pen are the words It might have been.--John Greenleaf Whittier ~*~ |
