Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Fall was the color of my wedding
and the turn of the marriage
High school sweethearts
young and dumb
Filling shoes to big
for our britches
We danced as grownups
when the babies came
and walked in the dark
of cursed crutches to
cope our lacking.
Twenty years
seemed like
an achievement
Until the dawning of
an idea anyone can
stay married
just don't divorce
feeling stupid
when others ask you
how you've stayed
married so long....
Ignoring the
infidelity
drinking and drugs
and the insidious
way everything
was always
my fault

Oh, this is the plight of many marriages, Lori. Why stay together? Different reasons, "the children" being only one. Not fully admitting that horrible mistakes were made, but not knowing exactly how to resolve, it, so grin and bear it seems to be the way many choose to live out their lives.

Then one day you wake up and smell the coffee and there is no going back to sleep.

Isn't it amazing the way we see things when we are so young, and the clarity of the stupid things we did, after a few years of growing up.

Enjoyed the read, and memories.

I still shake my head in disbelief and that was 15 yrs ago. My 2nd husband was worse... but that's another poem.
