Pariah

Somewhere in the Caverns of Time
The Pariah utters his rhyme,
And from his hands the fiery glow
Of Death slowly begins to grow.
All shadow fading in the stirring
Of light and sense in him…Conjuring
From madness deep set in the mind,
A majick of the darkest kind.

Skeletal frame – skin dead and rotten –
Working a realm all but forgotten…
Life placed in a balance of lore
He’ll carry, undead, evermore…
As if, by utterance devoid,
Hope then might find fate undestroyed;
Or vengeance overcome the past
In the form of his pyroblast!

Obliterating all trust held
By the faceless ghosts here, compelled
To wander in some aimless plight
This one page of eternal night…
Where each day the pariah wakes,
And all but consciously forsakes
The dreams he held once, as a child,
Of love, and hope – of mercies mild.

And so, in madness, uncertain
Of anything less than hurtin’ –
He strikes again, the past portrayed
In lifeless eyes, ever dismayed…
Where it’s true that none survive,
But everyday yet return, alive –
Pay unendingly for their crime,
Somewhere in the Caverns of Time.

Michael Anderson

But dreams — of those who dream as I,
Aspiringly, are damned, and die

It never fails. Never.
I want to highlight this line
then that line, then the whole
of the poem is covered in yellow
highlighter.

You should SEE my monitor!

When will you teach ME how to write?

It's a bit dark but very well penned, and then there is the light.

Good work!

This actually...(nerd alert) reminds me of a game I play online.  It's dark, yes, but I really enjoyed it.  Much like reading a dark fantasy novel; that's how this poem feels to me.

K, you bestow far too much honor in this direction.  I take writing lessons from you with every piece you post.

Blues, always there is a light… always a glimmer of hope.

Nicole, …and you win the grand prize!  I am about 99% sure you would be referring to World of Warcraft, which was the inspiration for this poem, most of which was written about 5 years ago.  “Pariah” was the name of my top-level mage who spent endless hours in the Caverns of Time offing ghosts from the pasts, with spells like “pyroblast” and “obliterate.”

It was the hours lost there, while life moved on in the outside world, which moved me to write this piece… seeing not just myself daily dying, doing the exact same thing in my very own non-productive manner, but most Americans in general. Everyone from street junkies to workaholics to Wall Street gurus are running from something.  Most just haven’t realized it yet.  Identifying what it is is the key to breaking the spell, and moving forward.

Grinning here... yes.  Yesssssss indeed.  I was a Druid - imagine that, right?  There's a balance, definitely.  I haven't played WoW in a few months, but have switched to Rift.  (I have a hoodie with the Alliance insignia on it...)

Aaaaanyway...Not to detract from your poem, which I really loved.  Including the parallel.  It is certainly an escape; the trick is not to get lost in it all.  Tricky, that

Thought I was just "reading" into this piece ...
nice to see I actually remembered something (re: your reply to Nicole) - use to watch my son play WoW, (I never got beyond first level of Mario!!!) in amazement actually, and thought I saw something in this piece...

well done, my friend...

I keep my nose buried in books and my game skills are limited to solitaire. *G* So this reminded me of life... and the cycles we repeat, the times we find ourselves doing the same things, making the same mistakes, unable to stop, unable to overcome... Breaking free may be possible but it carries a price... and the path to that freedom is so very hard to find.

Whatever the inspiration... the write is wonderful!!

Nicole, if I had to guess a class for you, druid would have been my first choice.  You emit that healing essence foremost, but the power to destroy is well sensed also.  I haven’t played anything for a couple of years now.  I did play Aion for about a year, after quitting wow, but it, too, proved more time consuming than I wished.  The trick to not getting lost in it all, I believe, is to have a sense of fulfillment in your “real” life… something I’m still working on.

Jwesley, Thank you, and lol on the Mario Bros.  I lost many an hour on that once upon a time, too.

Ruth, anything worthwhile comes with a price, it seems.     Thank you.
