i am ugly today, and the night is heavy the moon on my breast tightening this impossible ache; i swallow your light in gasps, left empty still, as a husk. the air suffers the sky, thunderous purpling the night on on on it rolls like a drum somewhere north some tiny thunder a heart is heavy today hot red smack of an open hand pink blooms to sting the dusk the live oak cries, cicadas quiet and the momentary silence roars through my veins and ears oh this murderous thought machine, grinding on through the storm i will unravel, one bare strand at a time; i refuse this undoing |

"i will unravel, one bare strand at a time;" You betcha, Nicole. Living today, or reliving the past is necessary to come to grips with who you were, who you are, and, with that unraveling, one bare strand at a time, who you will become. Loved this poem. ~~ Those who are silent are the first to be shot. ~~ |

excellent... I sympathize, and we've had a couple of days of such distant curtain-openings hereabouts, too. clever double use of "unravel"! |

Nicole, your poetry is exquisite, eloquent, excellent, superbly sensitive, spellbinding, beautiful . . . Did I say I rather like it (LOL!)? I am sad about your pain, but grateful for your sake and ours that you are able to express it like this and turn it into this (and other) wonderful works of art. I can see that your poems of pain are cathartic and I am glad about that. Owl |

"I refuse this undoing" - my favorite line! The grief and sadness that comes simply drives me to my knees at times, but I'm stubborn enough to not be unraveled wholly. Love it. |

Amaryllis - Resilience is something I aim for, and I'm very happy that it came through in this. Thank you for reading, you leave such lovely replies. Jerry - Thank you Sir, for seeing it the way that you did. It's a journey, this learning to accept my own human nature and all of it's shortcomings. A series of unravelings and reravelings (forgive...I'm pretty sure I just made those two words up) In all seriousness though, the journey is only half of it - what we take from it, learn from it, is something altogether different and equally as important. easy1 - Thank you, very much, indeed Owl - Thank you, thank you, thank you. They are indeed cathartic. I've been trying to work on that... not necessarily stemming the flow, but trying to hone it a little bit. Your replies always make me smile. shelerellaSP - It really does have the power to do that, sometimes. Stubbornness, tenacity, whatever it should be called - it is that fight to persevere that I am continually amazed by in humanity. Thank you |

Nicole, you are one of the most beautiful persons I've ever met... you couldn't be ugly on your worst day. I know well the emotion behind this piece, though, and you depict it very well. Your spirit and willingness to fight are what distinguishes you... don't ever lose those qualities. Michael |
