Its dark and creepy here.
In this south Louisiana swamp.
As creepy as it has always been,
darker thoughts have taken up residence here.
Stagnation is its name.
Stagnation is a carbuncle, which, if left alone,
will surely take the place of
actual living and breathing.
Look into the eyes of a person
smitten with stagnation.
You may have to look in the mirror.
Whatever.
You will see the desire of poor,
misguided souls with no chance in,
and for, life.
They are treading water
in a deep, cold cavernous pool of existence.
They think it unimportant to take on life,
to strive for all it holds,
they even make fun of those who do
seek a better way,
a more comfortable way of living.
The stagnant are content to sit home and wait for . . .
The Check.
This way they avoid being defeated
in the game of life.
Their life is
managed and controlled by Big Brother.
They do not fear defeat,
they don't run from it,
they embrace it.
Better to do nothing than to strike out on a new road.
For there may be a fork in that road,
thus a choice will have to be made.
They have never had to make choices,
somebody always does it for them.
If they choose to take a new road
where will it take them?
So, it is better to sit and mold,
grow old and ferment
into a hazy resemblance of themselves.
Generation after generation after . . .
To stagnate is to never see the sun.

"Its dark and creepy here."

Enjoyed the read.
Man, I can't wait for Vol. 2!
Now I'm all creeeeeeped-out.
Add in a few characters and some action and you would have a Friday night TV special.
I had visions of British romantic zombie comedy directed by Edgar Wright - Shaun of the Dead.

You have a gift to put into words what others can only see at the movies.

Really enjoyed.

"...generation after generation..." it is a cycle that is inherently demoralizing.  Some have never tasted the sun...They have no idea what they can do or how good it feels.  It is very sad and frustrating at the same time. Good write my friend.

Yep, you are absolutely correct, Lori. There are would-be genesis being wasted away. Some have cracked the steel doors of dependency, but the percentage is not that high.

Very much to the point, m'friend.

Have you noticed that they are performing another annual ritual in New Orleans?

The cleaning of the roof of the superdome.

(It turns green every year from mold, or possibly even envy...)

And somehow, there's still no place like home. Enjoyed the poem much, Jerry.

I think I just talked myself into an Allegra, too. *hugs*

Thanks, serenity, but you have to be careful of those Allegras. Didn't know it was dome cleaning time.I think it turns green in celebration of all those greenbacks that pass hand therein.

They do not fear defeat,
they don't run from it,
they embrace it.

Some have never known anything else. And it's not just in the swamps. *sigh* Bad situation... good write!

Oh, I understand it isn't just in the swamps, suthern. It is everywhere, even worldwide. Eventually when more take than the once that can pay there will be anarchy and riots in the streets of America.

"to never see the sun"
or consider the moon . . .

Such a perpetual waste, from anyway you look at it.

Still, a fit topic for the poet.
