Yea, the sweetness of youth heavenly blessed,
Will eventually fade away and die,
We forge on n'er thinking burial dress,
We're growing old 'ere we reach for the sky.
See us in our prime, walking on the moon,
We smell the sweet nectar of our life's scent,
Not knowing life's path is liberally strewn,
With the odor of our own discontent.
When truth finally visits our abode,
We weakly cry, come back sweet youth, come back,
We'd dearly like to change things on life's road,
But time goes forward into death's pitch black.
Life is a gift, live it with that in mind,
How you walk the walk is how you're defined.

Lovely, Jerry!  Truth in its stark, but beautiful reality of the negative leading to the positive, and an excellent lesson in the well-blended mix!

Thanks Owl, this aging process has caused many lines of verse. I just added mine to the mix,

Excellent sonnet, dear Jerry! Those
thoughts that grab us sometimes are very well expressed.

No doubt about changing a few things if we could go back! Personally I wouldn't want to go back, even though I am well aware of the mistakes in my life. I am the sum now of what I have done, just as you conclude. It was a learning process somehow. While our old bones become fragile, our awareness becomes stronger. Youth remains intact deep within, as a feeling of enthusiasm for existence, but we must give it the chance to surface.

"Young in the heart" we say to comfort maybe someone, but it is the key to wellbeing no less.

Great, thought provoking write, as always.

Love,
Margherita

I'm of the opinion, Margherita, that things could have been set up a little differently. That is if the concept of one entity conceiving and bringing everything together under His own power.

My concept of youth is strong, as you said, within me, and that is why I understand the youth of today as they rebel. I rebelled in my own fashion. It is how it it, the young throwing off the old. The only thing I worry about is that the youth of today (except a few) are not educated in many respects, especially of they went through the public educational system. Brainwashed? They most certainly are that, and it is scary.

I wasn't actually thinking  of buying the burial dress, Sunshine, just maybe thinking of the future, and "that" day and what it could mean to different people in our sphere.

Thank you for taking the time to read my poem and comment on them.

Ah, there was a story behind my comment.
My MIL lost her husband in 1978, and I met
her son in late 1979. When he brought me
"home" to meet her prior to our marriage,
she was showing me around the house, and
commented to me that I would have to make
sure that when it was her time, [as she went
to her closet] to bury her in "this dress."
She pulled out a lovely Kelly-green dress
and I had by now anticipated that she was
planning on me being her DIL [good] but I
was surprised that she already had her
funeral plans laid out, even down to the
underwear.

We didn't pull that dress out again until 2008.

I seem to be running across poems today that
bring a lot of memories scurrying back to me.

JP2...You are so right. Life is so short. It seems when we are young we have the get up and go , but then when we get old, our get up has gone. Enjoyed your sonnet poem...Paul
