Pondering Labor Day

Listening to the birds in the field,
feeling the impending heat of the day
trying to break through the cool air
with utmost frustration I ponder
the coming of Labor Day
and I wonder...
where did the summer go?

How can it be that
autumn is just around the corner?
I gaze at the trees on the hills
and see they’re beginning to change
from greens to the hues of fall
but they appear to be reluctant
as reluctant as I to have summer
bid its farewell.

It’s too soon for popcorn
in front of the fire,
for putting the blankets
back on all the beds,
for storing away the outdoor furniture,
to think about stews and simmering hearty soups,
for turning back the clocks
and the planting of spring bulbs.

I don’t want to think about Halloween decorations
and Thanksgiving recipes and guest lists.
I’m not ready for Christmas shopping
and decorating. I want Memorial Day and
the Fourth of July all over again with
parades, cotton candy, hamburgers, hot dogs,
and lots more nights at the lake star gazing.

What an excellent write.
Vivid expressions of summer.

( loved your poem, but I like winter months better)

Dear Marcia,
your poetic rendering of the melancholy at Summer's passing is so vivid and intense! The freedom and lightness of summer days comes through beautifully and make me want to join you at the lake to stargaze together!

I love Summer, but when the heat is almost paralyzing and the mosquitos too hungry for me ... then I dream of Winter and mentally paint its magic.

I love this poem very much.

Love,
Margherita

Thank you Margherita. You've made my day.

At the end of summer we long for winter, at the end of winter we long for summer. We are human and this is our way.

I never believed my parents when they complained that time was flying by because there's a whole forever between morning and night when you're young. *S* Now I understand... and your poem captured the ponder so very well!!

Hang on to the last whispers of summer, Marcia, and milk every moment, for so is the happiness of a poet - to live intensely in the moment.  The nostalgia of a poet relives the past, and the hopes of a poet wishes for the future, but the present is what makes today worthy of being the yesterday of the future.  There is time enough to wrap yourself in autumn and winter when they arrive in their appointed time.

I'm ready for the Fall just for the fact that is has been way too hot here. But, I'm not ready for all of these holidays either.

For a guy with emphysema, the summertime blues can be difficult. Still, I try not to complain about the seasons, just take them as they come. It isn't that we have much choice, except thank goodness for air conditioning. I recall growing up without it.

I've always been reluctant to get rid of summer every year. It must be because autumn is my favorite season. The crisp air feels well in my lungs after the laboring effort to breathe in the heat of July. Great write mam.
