Romance – the old fashioned way There was something to be said about the way games were once played now we call it internet slang but a long time ago it was even better as a parlor game, Secretaire with chalk and paper, and prettiness wrapped up in secret knowledge, where only two minds merging as one traveled surreptitious byways unraveling secrets of the heart… and if truly connected to one another there was no need but to find the answer in each other's eyes... Imagine… Her hair falling gently over her shoulder glinting in the candlelight I l y (I love you) He, stooping slightly, breathing in her scent, etching Y, I k (Yes, I know) She smiles slightly, pink lips rising to the blush upon her cheeks, writing I t p a f f u (Is there possibly a future for us) And he simply wants to pour forth his ardent truths, and writes, I o b s (I often believe so) Ah, yes, a parlor game of hushed love no extravagance of loud voices, flailing arms, or need of anything other than two hearts quietly writing I l y ~*~ © krj 8-16-11 Sparked by Tolstoy, AK 66502 |

I love this tender rendering of once upon a time Romance shorthand, dear Karilea. "Itpaffu" makes me wonder about how long it took him to interprete it Such a lovely love game! You set the ambiance and made me share in the magic. Love, Margherita |

Very well done, Sunshine! You brought romance-R- into the text email age. Quite clever, and still very romantic. Ms. E |

I never played the game, but I played the game without the codes, if you understand. It would have been fun though. ~ I knew drugs weren't the answer. I just had to find out for myself. ~ |

Sissie...You must have made this game up. I never heard of it. (but there was spin the bottle) I guess I came along too early, or too late. Enjoyed this...I'll bet it was fun. |

Thank you, Poets. While making my first read of Anna Karenina [finally!] I was ever amused at this game, first for its given name, Secretaire, and it's encryptive nature. The poem came easily. And if the name of the game can be anglicized in any way, then "secret air" still fits, doesn't it? They don't imagine games like this much anymore, do they? "The business of the poet...is to show the sorriness underlying the grandest things and the grandeur underlying the sorriest things." Thomas Hardy |

Makes me yearn to hop a time-machine to land on "surreptitious byways" and engage in games engaging of so many sentiments... "where only two minds merging as one traveled surreptitious byways unraveling secrets of the heart…" this caught my heart in a way I cannot explain! Thank you for this lovely write!! |

simply superb! "P.I.P.-land" by the cyber-sea could use much more pure 'Romanticism' these days, methinks?! |

Very nice, Sunny I don't think that this kind of romance is out of date, or old fashioned..but I do believe that the skills involved are being lost, and that is a shame for society. Love the poem. |
