The Big Heat The Big Heat is comin' tumblin' like a slum drummer out of the steamy underground to stare me in the face and I dunno how long I've been on this case or all the gasoline drunk on the chase and all the girls of leather and all the girls of lace They all just wanna trip until the dawn light splatters like a tomato thrown at a singer climbing ladders out of key, out of tune out of a cigarette fog moon The weatherman said it's gonna be a hot one tonight a hundred n' ten in the shade beyond the downtown light and I swore a non-involvement clause but somehow I get embalmed in her claws and all the girls of chaos and all the girls of laws And I need a strong cocktail of doubt and self-pity but it won't ever wash the grime from this city in a pool of black blood in the sound of an awful thud The Big Heat is slummin' thumbin' the interstate runnin' into a palace of beautiful sin to pass out on the dash and I dunno how long this junk's gonna last or the tequila sunrise pullin' up fast over all the girls clear over all the girls overcast They all just wanna steal a drink from my gun flask and keep me distracted from my hardest task a mystery to unwind in a bright white chalk outline Yeah the Big Heat will come the rain simmerin' 'round a bass drum humidity of the sweaty underground c'mon look at my face and I wanna know when I get paid for this case downin' shots with the devil at his place with all the girls of leather with all the girls of lace Yeah I said gonna be a hot one tonight hell in the blood red shade lit by the Zippo of downtown light and I'm numbed, head over heels over feet and I lie, I've got that damn Big Heat beat cap the bottle, close the case someone please look at my face Yeah baby can't you see I'm frickin' drowning here tonight? Ah, damn man, I'm sitting beside you as "The Big Heat" tries to suffocate us to keep us from getting the job done. I'm your sidekick, Tonto to the Long Ranger, but you don't have to kick so hard, if you know what I mean. I'm here to take the leftover girls of raw and those of chaste, I'm not proud, otherwise I wouldn't be a sidekick, Pat Buttram to Gene Autry. We've got a long haul through "The Big Heat," and although it is our worse case every, just gimme a slug of o that gin-mill stuff and I'm good for another twenty-four. ~ I knew drugs weren't the answer. I just had to find out for myself. ~ |
