White Flag She seems to think what she won’t tell Has no way of hurting me, As if not knowing weren’t the hell That I make it out to be. Still, I don’t need a name or face To understand this distance… It’s clear that I’ve been replaced, And she fears some resistance. And it’s that fear, but time can mend, That leads me to say nothing – Let go the hand of my best friend While she reaches for something To ease the burdens of a wound That may never find healing… Coming from one so well attuned To everything she’s feeling. In silence I can only pray Her heart learns to trust again. That she will truly be okay – Not a prisoner to some past “when.” My everything worth fighting for, What purpose will fighting serve? For all I long for something more, I’m but getting what I deserve. And so I raise my white flag, Biting my lips in frustration. Surrendering purpose to the drag Of life less inspiration. I walk away with eyes grown dim, Not caring where I am going… With, strangely, no malice toward him Of who I’m still not knowing. Michael Anderson Like one that on a lonesome road |

Michael, intense, "white flag"," deserving." We all deserve much more than what we ask, and that is a pure love. It will come, so be ready. ebonygirl |

"My everything worth fighting for, What purpose will fighting serve?" Got to agree with you here my friend. If we were just hormonal (and sadly, some are anyway) beast with nothing better to do in life but spread seed, fighting might be the way to go - but that's not what we are, and it if takes a "fight" to 'keep' someone, then that someone probably isn't worth the effort anyway, and generally it's a never ending battle from that time on, or, at the least, in your mind you now always have to wonder "when's the next time". I've spend 38 years not having to question that particular facet, and I would not trade that tranquility for anything. Good write. j. |

I agree with jwesley about the fighting-to-keep-my-woman. I would for "for" her honor, but if I have to fight to keep her, no thanks, it would never ever work except in the short time. For there would be another time, down the road, when you will have to fight again, and then, you will finally realize you are fighting for a whore. ~ Man who fish in other man's well often catch crabs. ~ |

Thank you all for the kind replies... On a side note, it appears clarity has once more failed me. It's not a physical fight for her I am speaking of... but an intellectual "argument" with her, where reason seems to hold an unswerving advantage over emotion. Tired of trying to convince one of far superior intellect to follow the heart instead of the head has proven a most weary challenge... thus, I waive the white flag. I, also, wasn't referring to a physical fight but a third party fight never-the-less...as opposed to yours. Tough either way... j. |

Michael...It's easier to surrender than to fight with a broken heart. Still, your poetic expression is full of heart. |

Fine writing, Michael. such is the complexity we humans face, it’s tough to convince people we care, sometimes white flag is all the option we got. "The secret behind survival of mankind is kindness and love within our hearts" |

In silence I can only pray Her heart learns to trust again. That she will truly be okay – Not a prisoner to some past “when.” Some battles can never be won, for to win the skirmish is to lose something more valuable. So much frustration resides within these lines... but there's even more love. As beautiful as it is heartbreaking... |

jwesley, Aye that. James, Thank you much. Martie, pulling the pieces together, in a sense I suppose. Thank you. Prasad, The complexities of this one may never be fully understood, even by me. Right now, that white flag might not be my only option, but it's definately the only one I'm considering. Ruth, Yup. Sometimes, no matter how much we like to think otherwise, there are no winners. Just picking up the pieces and moving on might be the best one can hope for. JL, I'm glad you enjoyed. Michael |
