SOLITUDE 1991 Can it be that to revel in moods of sun and wind and rain, To caress the velvet warmth of sunshine on my horse’s winter coat, To share opinions with him on matters of workaday importance, To walk in ecstasy through leafy forests bustling with little lives and little sounds, To wander through poetry books and piano music in the bowels of the night, I have to be alone? It seems I must choose between solitude and polystyrene conversations about false nails and BMW’s, while stringing my lips into plastic smiles that hurt my head. Oh Solitude cool, silent, soothing Solitude, forgive me for having doubted you so. Owl |

I enjoy solitude, but mostly during those unavoidable low times ... the gloomy blues |

Yes I do love my solitude. Especially talking to my cats. Some people think I am crazy for talking to my cats. LOL When the family is together, the soul is at peace - Russian Proverb |

Perfect bit of writing here, Owl. I have basically been a solitude person all of my life, even as I tried, in vain mostly, to show the world I wasn't. I never quite succeeded in fooling the world. ~ Clones are people two ~ |

Rex, it is good to enjoy something when you can’t avoid it. A quote I copied as a teenager – I forget who said it, but it goes like this: “The truly happy man is he who, when forced to make a detour, enjoys the scenery.” Julie, I must be crazy then, because I would think you were crazy if you DIDN’T talk to your cats. Smiles. Please, cuddle them all for me and tell them it’s from their Auntie Di in sunny South Africa. Thank you for your stunning compliment, Jerry. That (not the compliment! – what followed) is brave, honest, perspicacious, with a tinge of sadness and a large dollop of mature contentment, because it is in solitude that one can know, appreciate and be oneself the most and I have learned in 65 years that that is what nurtures serenity. Solitude is a good thing sometimes as we all need some time to re-group before continuing the battle. Ida |

"polystyrene conversations about false nails and BMW’s" well said Diana. there is nothing quite as sweet as being left alone to think what one will without interruption. |

"It seems I must choose between solitude and polystyrene conversations about false nails and BMW’s, while stringing my lips into plastic smiles that hurt my head." I'm so glad you made the right choice and you share your solitude thoughts with us here. I find your thoughts candidly honest yet dipped in a deep vat of thought after which they're written onto these pages displaying kindness, mature independence, open mindedness, feelings for nature and fellow humans. You MUST continue it's your blood's work! Eric |

`polystyrene conversations`...oh I can so relate! I too adore solitude...for me, as necessary as sunshine. (not TOO much, however!) What fine writing. Amaryllis |

Thank you Steaven. That is so much how I feel. Thank you Eric. Your reply blows me away. I feel so very honoured at your words. However, I am not so good at the fellow humans part. I find myself saying so often, aloud and in my thoughts, “ I just don’t understand people – but animals are just so easy to understand and communicate with.” Nevertheless, I have strong feelings for humanity in general, and for the people I like – like Pipsters, for example, and I feel very strongly about the rights of all people! I respect everyone on the planet – Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandela, I respect very, very much – Hitler, Mugabe and Jeffrey Dahmer very, very little indeed, but just enough not to kick them if they were lying on the ground. As regards the independence bit, you are right there. Most times I think that I am far too independent – and other times I think I am not independent enough. I keep re-reading your reply for the glow it gives me. Thank you again. Thank you, Amaryllis. Yes, you are right. One can have too much of a good thing. Owl |
