. Sunday afternoon And the town Is settling down Into its routines The stolid mayor His higher officers Are on parade The fashionable Or at least newly rich Walk the cobbled streets of Delft Grandly dressed in their cloth and silk To impress God and lesser beings Maids and servants Are out and about The tavern’s closed There are sundry smells Lingering in the dusty air Now I take An hour or two Matching awe With practiced skill To give your heart And the world after you The sacrament of light . |

Oh, John, this is lovely! I love Vermeer and other Dutch artists. You depicted this beautifully. I don't know that painting - or rather I didn't until I read your poem.
