Each careful touch with pauses placed from heartfelt thoughts of lives erased. As Taps are blown the bugle’s song a tear appears from weak, from strong. A tear of sadness, tear of loss Tear of remembrance, of life’s cost. Quiver of cheek, a sniffle dried for all that gave, for all that died. Many departed to not return from lands of terror, bodies burned. From cliff side graves of shallow fill and hurried prayers, of those who kill. They came to free, they came to save. From birth of morn to waiting grave. They gave a soul, that I might leave a thought, a hope, a moment’s grieve. The beaches bled, the volleys flew from cannon red, from snipers too. And as the sun did set the land they fought, they fought...a gallant stand. A flag unfurled across deep seas in honor of life’s liberties. Where many fell, as others cried American born, filled with our pride. As nations strong remember them, a bugle plays a warrior’s hymn and to the graves of those in rest I give my heart, my soul, my best. And I freely cried |

Very patriotic. Love the choice of format, makes it sound almost anthemic when read aloud. Since you encourage constructive critiques, I'll say that maybe you should consider writing with a longer line. A few of your lines seemed a little pushed in, like you had more to say than your line length would allow, and you had to trim out some articles & prepositions. Your poem has a lot to say. Still, I do like the fast pace, which matches the imagery well. Reminds me a lot of Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade." Hope you find my comments useful. Just a little observation from a writer probably much less experienced than yourself. Great poem all the same and thank you for sharing. One of your best, ever, m'friend. So glad you had a moment to share it all with the newer members... and a reminder to us older members that you remain as good as you ever were. ![]() |

I have come to look forward to this poem each year now, to say the words truly felt by many and in appreciation for all of our brave servicemen. Glad to see you here! |
