I have known the glory of battle and the taste of victory, sweet. Heard the ringing clash of arms and borne the burden of defeat. I have carried forth the banners of nations and of kings. Fought for love and honor and some less virtuous things. On the battle field I held my breath against the foul stench of death while my mind recalled the pageantry that had envisioned only victory. Then I looked into the eyes of a mother in the aftermath of war and chose to come into this world as a warrior... Nevermore. Ida Werrett |

Dear Ida, how deeply poignant your "evolving warrior"! Not vengeance but compassion will pave the path to our evolution. Awesome offering. Love, Margherita |

Very beautiful, Ida. I am not sure I understand the last stanza. I think you were talking about at your birth. Owl |

A thought-provoking and respectful tribute to the hardship of war. I especially love how sharply the contrast is struck from a handful of abstract ideals with a single image of suffering. So often the straw that breaks the camel's back is the first one to fall there. Lovely poem. Constructive critique? Write more poetry. This is a beautiful poem, ida. "Fought for love and honor and some less virtuous things." I can relate to that. Peace and humanity seem to be polar opposites don't they. And as your poem points out, sadly, it's what we choose. |
