Another year of High School comes to an end here in little city middle America The summer is about to descend upon the kids For good or ill it will change them For some it will be the summer that drugs got the better of Others will leave a little of the drama behind A few will become baby daddies and baby mamas While others turn eighteen then drop out just because they can More than just a couple Will have run-ins with the law So what will be will be And come mid August we will welcome them back into our fold with open arms of optimism for their success Another new year of trying to get them to hang in long enough to graduate. I work in a special program that is designed to help students that are at high risk for dropping out. We are not a traditional classroom. We are not a Special Ed or Behavior Disorder class. Our students are, for various reasons, behind in credits. We are designed to help them catch up. Unlike other classes, we have our students more than once a day and they will continue to come back each year until they graduate. It is challenging but very rewarding. LGR©5/20/11 |

A bitter-sweet time when all you can give them as they leave the halls of education is a wing...and a silen prayer for a safe return. |

"little city middle America" is that somewhere in Kansas? I hear you on all accounts, Lori. There are a lot of reasons for those who don't care to swim along with the system. A lot of times it is home life. One-parent households doesn't seem to be holding their own when it comes to managing their children, especially children who are growing up with their mothers where Uncle Sam takes the place of the father. Sorry, Lori. I realize that is just one reason some of the kids are like they are. And you could probably show me instances where one-parent children are doing wonderfully well. Still . . . ~ Plastic surgeons are always making mountains out of molehills. ~ |

you are very right Jerry, and the kids that are doing okay aren't in our program. Quite a few have difficult home situations though... it is sad and frustrating. |

Love the dedication of the majority of teachers. It's exceptional and I don't think they receive the credit they deserve. Nicely done Lori! Eric |
