I Remember June On the borders of cornfields the sweet mullein grows, And the butterflies play there like nobody knows, Upon yellow sweet golden sunlight of the noon, When dark crickets sleep deep, and bright birds sing in tune. For the hours pass slowly into the great gloom; Those eastern skies darken as these western skies bloom, Where cornstalks rustle low in a breeze from the moon, And the borders, past borders: I remember June. The night birds are calling, and bright stars shine through haze. Crickets chirp everywhere in ground-sounding ways. The sparse traffic on the road is distant as hell, For soon the sun will rise like a big golden bell. And how the Sun rises so far north in its track! The East speaks of day, and the West no longer black. Earthworms do crawl, the mullein stands like lonely loons Rise above dew-grassed borders: I remember June. |
