you did that thing with your velvet glances
placing them carefully over the chrome I had on
like smoothing over something was more important
than just using the shimmer shine for reflecting

and after on the stairs in your evening sensitivity
you let the lights of those candles show between
where we had already decided to get deeper into
and where we were moving well beyond stopping

perhaps it was the morning after that morning after
when you brought soup in a can and crackers
with that backpack still in price tag newness
and a baseball cap instead of exercising hairdos

you left your tennis shoes untied on purpose
for scuffing across voyeuristic bedroom floors
barefoot and hurrying back to that line again
where you said heaven and hell just zipped together

but you loved how you felt right after undoing them
