![]() Artist: John William Waterhouse Carnal Sins by Linda L. Dowd From mid of nite ‘til dawning morrow, Alone stoodst I, in weeping sorrow. Upon a hill laid bare by winds, ~ Wracked by guilt of carnal sins. With cloak of shame wrapped ‘round me tight, I felt bone chill of moonless night. Alone atop that barren tor, ~ Wanting to be never more. I knew ‘twas wrong ~ but mine flesh be weak, Protesting not ~ for I couldst not speak. Yielding to his uttering, ~ My heart beat in fluttering. Burning passion in his limpid eyes, Stirred glowing embers to flame arise. I rode a wave of carnal bliss, ~ Sealed by mine lover’s kiss. I be not free to love another, For I didst have mine wedded lover. Yet stirrings I’d not knownst before, ~ Opened up forbidden door. From mid of nite ‘til dawning morrow, Alone stoodst I, in weeping sorrow. Upon a hill laid bare by winds, ~ Wracked by guilt of carnal sins. . |

Interesting poetry, and certainly well-written and delivered. In your next to last verse there is a line which could be taken two ways. The line, "For I didst have mine wedded lover." The reader (me) at first took it to mean the lover was married to another, but something made me go back and reread it and it could just as well be read that she had bedded her own husband, but that he stirred lustful passions she had never before experienced and is wondering if there is something wrong with her. Actually, I like the last interpretation better. Whatever, and however, it was a very good poem. ~ Look hard behind you and you'll be able to maneuver around the pitfalls ahead of you. ~ |

Oh, that "forbidden door" ... how you let us peak into the heart of a woman of other times, dear Linda! You had an incredible inspiration by that beautiful impressive painting. And the language? So refined, just so apt to plunge into an atmosphere that brings back realities that were so true and gripping once upon a time. A true gem, dear Poetess. Thank you for sharing it with us. Love, Margherita |

JerryPat ~ Thank you for your thought-filled reply! That line that you referred to, "For I didst have mine wedded lover", is in reference to her husband and that is why she is feeling guilty for betraying him. ![]() Linda |

Maga Margherita la Seniorita que Bonita! Oh, my dear Dolphina, I loved your appraisal of my post in its entirety. I adore that dark, and somber painting. It took my poetry in another direction and I'm pleased that you find it appealing. Love you! Linda |
