Beyond the Pipes of Doom When bears the rose of summer naught but thorn beyond all light and hope of love's fair star where by the grip of time and chance forlorn, fair youth in ruin lies behind too far; Then ag’d darkness sweeps the sun away as soon the Autumn splendor bows to gloom, for death and Winter’s reign no one may stay and all must dance the fateful pipes of doom. No tree, nor rock, nor bronze, nor boundless sea shall stand the rage of Deep Time tempest blast; no king nor sage nor priest nor poet’s plea shall carve a future from the squander’d past. By poet ink in death’s bleak endless night may love and Spring be ever shining bright! --- b. e. adams (03/05/2011) (marching to that distant beat of an Iambic pentamborine?!) |

As always, this is a very beautiful poem, Bruce, although it is very negative, except for the title and the last 2 lines. However, life is bubbling with so many wonderful positive things and love and spring are only 2 of them. I was surprised and pleased at the delightful humour about the iambic pentambourine! Owl |

Wow! This is a bit different for you, Bruce. but outstanding as usual. It is rather classic, which I just love. Ida |

I've been accused of 'many things' ... one of which is not writing 'serious' or 'real' poetry (in traditional forms and with rhyme; etc.) ... and that I am 'stuck in' verse libre ... It is certainly true that I don't typically 'do' sonnets ... but then who could possibly 'best' Shakespeare ... particularly Sonnet #s: 18 and 116 for example?! |

Excellent Bruce! No one gets out of this one alive. What one does from the first light of day to the dirt nap rests on the shoulders of attitude. Great stuff! Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Awesome ; Bruce, you are quite as good in sonnet than in free verse, Thanks for the very emotional read and the great moment of poetry. yann |
