How do the old folks know it's going to rain?
Gramma's in the kitchen knee giving her the pain.
Grampa's on the front porch lighting up his pipe.
Stupid government programs causing him to gripe.

Gramma's waves her arms and her voice bursts forth
“Rain's coming in, it's coming from the north.”
Grampa looks up and sees dark clouds roll in.
He pulls more tobacco from his metal bin.

Wind comes up and makes the trees shake.
Gramma looks in the oven to see the pie bake.
Oven door open the heat rolls out, pies not done.
After dinners all over, they will have a lot of fun.

How do the old folks know it's going to rain?
Grampa says the times are bad and the government's to blame.
The sky grows dark and the lightening flashes
Grampa gets up and goes to close the sashes.

They have an indoor privy to use when company comes.
Sometimes they give out food to the railroad bums.
But they expect the bums to do a little work for dinner.
Something for nothing will make a man a sinner.

Charley and Mable Bridges where their names.
Lumber and farming were their games.
They lived long ago in the dust bowl days.
They were quite humble, didn't accept praise.

One thing was true no one can deny.
Grampa liked a slice of cheese on his apple pie.
After pie was over it was time for a game of hearts.
Wind was whipping at the house trying to tear it into parts.

The old folks don't care there are inside laughing at the storm.
Mostly they stay on the inside where it's dry and warm.
They had no care for dark clouds and thunder.
That they enjoyed life so well, makes me wonder.

They enjoyed life because it was WAY more simple.  I miss those days, and actually had grandparents very similar.

Dear GB, I love the down-to-earth folksiness of your writes!

"Grampa liked a slice of cheese on his apple pie."

~ As my grandpa would say, "Apple pie without cheese ~ is like a kiss without a squeeze."
