I'm Absent, Your Heart
(c) 2009 C.G. Ward

-----

the tarmac is bland.
the sun, dim,
and shy,
and sorrowful.

we waved the flag,
red and white and black and blue.
it simmered,
yanked insecurity from insubstantiality.

     the government,
     it is chill,
     a reenactment of purpose,
     parody of completion.

i called,
you cried,
we sang egyptian songs
as if past lives meant something more
than the dreams we remember
and the ones we dismiss.

     the government,
     it is base,
     reflective,
     if not a reflection.

wind,
silent, furious,
kissed my temple,
fortified resolve...
met distance.

yet the flightless birds
moved us onward,
the hopeful
carrying the meek.

     the government,
     it sucks,
     the life,
     the will,
     the hope.
          and you will eat it
          and smile
          and whine
          and go home to your
               HDTV
          to watch American Idol
          in protest.

  //--//

i'm absent,
your heart.

  //--//

see -- what you always forget
is that i have counted the stars,
and named three for you.
and this:
one for mother,
a dozen for myself.

if that doesn't say it all,
then you weren't paying attention.

When what's being said isn't what one wants to hear, we can be willfully deaf. *S*

I love this, C... even if I must now reexamine my AI addiction! LOL

Thanks, all. It's amazing, but even after all this time (over ten years, wow), I still appreciate the feedback and the wonderful sharing of thoughts.
