Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

For my Mom ~ who raised five children, knit our mittens, baked our bread, told us stories about Jack Frost and taught us that Sundays are quiet days.
Sunday Solitude

Another Sunday-sit-down cup of tea
The kids play games; the bread loaves slowly bake
The smell of ginger tea and yeast is freed
She thinks about the patterns still to make;
A strand of purple yarn falls off her knees.
As windy air sends autumn to the lake
The days, now short, become much longer nights
It’s time for mittens, scarves and woolen tights.

The birch leaves turn a muted gold with grace
And skies now frame the world in vivid blue
While icy, fall air longs to chill her face
It frosts the breath, to reach from hat to shoes
The window panes are tatted with fine lace
Designs on frosted glass, etched art to view
Another Sunday-sit-down-sipping day
She drinks the warmth to keep the cold at bay

Alison, I am giving you a standing ovation ~ and 2 thumbs up ~ and a high five!!! Wow, did you ever come up with a beauty of an Otava Rima!!! Well done!!!! I'm saving this as a fine example of this poetic form!!!

~ Not only for the technically perfect form, but for the 'hearth'-warming qualities of it!
It was a pleasure to read and to have a glimpse into your life. Your beautiful Mom created a beautiful daughter.

Love you, Lasky Girl!

I love this, so comforting, Alison and I remember those cold days and long nights very well. An Occtava Rima, hmmm. Never heard of it but I wouldn't mind giving it a try.

Sundays used to be that way here too. Too much clatter these days on Sundays. You brought back those sweet times here

Rileigh,

I struggled so much with meter when I started the Workshop.  I still do sometimes.  I have cried buckets.  You are doing great!  Keep up the writing.

inky girl,

I just make time.  Bought a red teapot to take upstairs when I read.  It relaxes me and makes me think of my Mom's house.

Give it a shot sometime.

(does happy dance) Oh my gosh, you did an amazing job covering this poetic structure while also offering your beloved mother the most complete, fitting tribute...........this resonates with such warmth and Norman Rockwell-esque beauty and simplicity that anyone can easily relate to and reflect on their own mother's incandescent love! (huggies) This is a timeless treasure, my friend, truly one of my absolute favorites of yours to date!
