~ Summer evening ~ It is dusk and the sun has set Over the hills and tall pine trees Over the village with its shops and streets Over the loch that shines back at me All my work of the frenzied day Is now discarded and put away It is evening and the little stars Light up the sky with their gentle glow A time serene and calm and sweet A break in the humdrum world I know When I can sit in my garden chair As mellow softness fills the air If I could choose that earth stand still One moment more special than the rest If I could stop at my own free will To be alone and feel my best It would be that time, not day, not night But the hour between, the precious twilight |

Oh, the twilight, yes it is so so special, even though it brings me deep melancholy, an intense yearning for something greater and larger than us we know exists, but can't be grasped totally from down here. Wonderful poem, dear Katriona. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Love, Margherita |

"But the hour between, the precious twilight" I agree with you, I love the twilight time, that reminds me of the old moody blues song too! great poem heart2heart In his mantle gray he walked one day across a shining floor and with crystal key in secrecy he opened an ivory door -J.R.R. Scotland must be a hauntingly beautiful place... Your poem is lovely (and I know just how you feel). |

'The precious twilight', is a great line! There are some haunting rhymes and a sunglowing cadence about your work - it helps me see the place you are in. I also enjoy poems which have the technique of recording the everyday yet suddenly, and surprisingly, offer a telling metaphor. Philip Larkin's 'Whitsun Weddings' poem uses this idea to magnificent effect. After the train arrives his 'arrow-shower' gleams within the lines - truly pentecostal! Distant connections between life and landscape 'mind sculpture' our emotional states. In your poem I revive derelict dreams, and enjoy a samadhi coloured state. Yet this golden succour upon daily drudgery shifts in the light of other cultures. In eastern lands the quotidian in life has its purity of being. Tasks the west sees as drudgery, others feel are transmuted by repetition - ritually cleansed by constant application. Nature breaks into blossom each year - regardless of lasting drought or fire.... This exquisite peace of heaven is as beautiful as your name, Katriona. My mother came from Scotland. One day, perhaps the crime rate in South Africa will decrease to the degree that we can sit in such tranquility twixt the two lights, too. Owl |
