in the shadows

This year is ending,
brittle cold finally tempering in sullen rain;
all years end
all lovers die,
some while passions burn still deep within
clinging to belief,
others,
like this grainy snow
outside my teary window
shadow flicked in broken moonlight
leaking low through scudding clouds,
seek oblivion's relief
to hurry into gutter flow;
as drifts melt dying
slow before my eyes.
