Two Old Souls

I saw two old souls
Sitting on a porch swing together
And I wondered as I watched
What they were like when they were young.
Did they know the passions of youth,
The heart-pounding terrible longings?
Did they know the pain of an unfaithful lover,
Or the joy of love returned?
Are they dreaming of days
When skin was firm and unwrinkled
And eyes were bright and undimmed?
Do they still see each other
In their glorious youth,
Laughing, planning, hoping?
To have shared life's road together
As they now share the swing ~
What patience must have grown there,
What sharing of burdens,
What loving care must have been given.
Lord, grant me that on my road of life
There might be someone at the end,
With whom I may look back
At all the sharing and loving we've known,
So that someone might see us
There on the porch swing
And wonder.

Thank you Slowlyfallaway and LindseyP, for your kind words about Two Old Souls. I'm afraid not all my poetry will measure up to your comments on this one, but thank you just the same. Here's the story on this poem: I was inspired to write Two Old Souls when I was leaving my parents' home for the airport after a visit with them. They just looked so beautiful on that swing, with a sunbeam just touching them, that with my heart filled with emotion, I wrote this poem in my mind all the way home on the plane. My Dad passed away in 1987 and my Mom in 1995, but I have never forgotten that moment in time. So whenever I read Two Old Souls I see them there, together, in my mind's eye. Thanks again for your kind words.

You have the powers of observation and a compassionate, loving heart that enables you to write truly touching poetry such as this.

May your dreams become your reality.
