on this first day of emptiness It would be more humane To toss both chest and contents Into the trash For that is all they are But note by note I replay the song That once was love Now proved to be Drivel with no substance. Insincere excuses Are no longer enough To comfort me Into contentment. So, letter after love note Burns my fingers As I let them go Berating myself for forgetting That those who ask questions Should be prepared to hear answers Even "NO, I don't." doing some housekeeping in the literal sense uncovered this attempt at emotional housekeeping... I won't bore you with how old it is... or how often the scene's been repeated. *G* |

Yes, the best thing is to let them go ... with no regrets and gently. Your words resonate with me. You said it so very well, dear Ruth. But love letters are definitely the most difficult thing to get rid of, because - though we might even have forgotten who wrote them (it happens!) - we love the evidence of having been loved. Love and lightness! Margherita |

It is a sad poem dear Ruth but I get the impression that it was a long time ago, so I sincerely hope that things have improved a lot for you since then. You are a far too lovely sweet person to have those things happen to you now. Good luck. Love to you. Lindsay |

Well written, suthern. A bittersweet look at emotional "spring cleaning," a self-directed therapy that we all partake of, on occasion. I can feel the flutter of the "what-ifs" in this sweet and intensely personal work. I remember that kind of song well, Ruth. You've captured the need for house-cleaning well - sometimes clearing old things out simply makes room for something new and positive. Much enjoyed. Best wishes, /Kit |

Margherita, said it for me.We reread and sigh and remember we were loved "that much"...I recently did the same and pulled out a box of notes, letters and cards. intending to finally throw them away. But could not do it, because as was said it does one good to be reminded that yes, we were once loved "that much" by some one we also loved. understading, latearrival |

Ruth, As you know, I am mentally going through things and trying to toss some things out. I really like this poem - but, I have really liked every poem of yours that I have read. Thank you for everything. Love, A |
