Clear your mind
from preconceived notations
titles and rhymes

step back and see
a childhood memor-me

a classroom filled with tiny chairs
activity stations
scattered
everywhere

a place to play house
tiny kitchen
and pretend spouse

cubbyholes for shoes
books and crayons
bemuse

and on the wall
above the boards
the alphabet language strings

funny shapes spelled out
giving meaning
to things

Practice Practice
writing hooks
over sized pencils
in newsprint grammar books

afternoon juice
afternoon naps
afternoon stories
and afternoon snacks

a time to play
choose your activity
for the day

wooden blocks that like to build
or something the cuddly reading bear
can fill

soft and gentle
__ feet high or more
or at least it seems
to a child of four

I don't remember reading
but I remember being read
when words are just pictures

all of them magical
______

Now or in kindergarten class

leaning back
dreaming back

cuddle up with a
big reading bear

_____

(fill in the blank poetry)

soft and gentle
six feet high or more
or at least it seems
to a child of four

I don't remember reading
but I remember being read
when words are just pictures

all of them magical
born from limitless imagination
by a true artist of creation.

Now or in kindergarten class

leaning back
dreaming back

cuddle up with a
big reading bear
feel the unencumbered joy
of a little trusting boy.

I could relate to this most lovely poem very much right now as I have relived this atmosphere in the kindergarten of my 5 year old grandson in the past days while accompanying him a few times.

Delightful, Brad. I do think sometimes of my own absolutely wonderful years at the Kindergarten, when the world seemed just all right and magical, just as you say.

Love,
Margherita

This week I was the subject of "Show and Tell" and as I stood facing those eager students in Grade 3 I noticed that no matter how hi-tec this world is getting - a classroom still looks, smells, and feels the same.

I loved your poem.  Nostalgic and so vividly drawn with your alphabet.
