I Thought of You |

I thought about you yesterday- As I drove by the road- That leads up to the shady plot Where you make your abode. I thought of how I met you- At the Fairgrounds that July- And how you looked so pretty In white while passing by. Your blue eyes and your golden locks Quite took my breath, you see- That innocent and sparkling smile That you bestowed on me. What joy and heartache lay ahead We neither one could know- You were a rancher's daughter- I chased the rodeo. I wooed you and I won you- I even won your Dad- I guess that I'll admit though I gave it all I had. We married in September- I had to miss two shows- And that is quite a sacrifice- For one who rodeo's. You told me then in April When flowers are so gay- "There's a little cowboy, Or cowgirl on the way." The summer passed so quickly I rode well this is true; But we began to worry When the child was overdue. My world just seemed to shatter- I knew the news was bad- The motel phone was ringing The caller was your Dad. He had to start a time or two- His was a broken tone- Said, "Son, I hate to tell you- But our little girl is gone." He told me of the bleeding- They couldn't get to stop- The wild drive to the Doctor But they couldn't find the Doc. And as your face grew paler- Before the passing came- You told him that you loved me- Kept calling out my name.... The preacher at the funeral- As preachers always do- Said you were in a better place I hope that that is true. If I had known how brief our time How soon that you would go- I'd have been home with you my dear And quit the rodeo. But I'm still going down the road My hair is getting grey- I hate the place without you there- I thought of you today. |

That is a beautiful and sad poem. I had to edit to add that I thought this was a wonderfully written piece. |

John, This is one of those poems I can hear as a song. It reminds me of the "Streets of Laredo" in that it touched my heart in a story-telling manner. You share so much with us in your poetry. Thank you. Alison |

What a tragic and moving tale, Gunslinger. A neo-classical ballad of the West. Well written, and finely crafted. Thank you. Sutra 4: Do not expect your Path to be smooth. It will have rocks, slippery portions, and parts that are washed away completely. Persevere. |
