Immortalized (from Boyhood Tales)

You haven’t been subject to life
in so many years . . .
today I’m amazed how large
the pile of them has grown,
and even when me I see reflected
is so different from what it used to be,
I see you as seventeen,
unchanged . . . immortal,
while I have aged with the gray,
of fifty more years.
Immortal, the photograph in my wallet
just out of sight of eyes
that may not understand
its place therein.
Seventeen,
when the paths we walked
diverged, and you . . .
you became,
immortalized.
