![]() Here it is Father's Day again, and this always will bring to mind, The teasing children did to my son, kids can be so unkind. When Father's Day came around, at Boy Scouts or at school, They would always make fun of him, make him out a fool. I would find a "substitute," where it called for "father and son," I was just another, single working Mom, with two jobs just for fun! No support, working long hours, every penny I made was spent, Keeping my son busy in activities, just covering the heat and rent. I figured if I kept him busy, got him involved in things with men, Being around me most of the time, wouldn't hurt him now and again. But kids always made fun of him, until one day he made me so proud. It was at a "Father and Son picnic," and it was a great big crowd. The three-legged race was announced, calling all fathers and sons. He said, "Come on Mom let's enter, it'll really be such fun!" I didn't know how to disappoint him, so off to that gate we went, A camp leader stopped us, for fathers and sons the race was meant. I've never been so proud, he looked up at him so sad, Wiping his tears, he simply said, "Well, this here lady IS my Dad!" She does all the things those dads do, she can fish, and throw a ball, Just because her name isn't dad, doesn't mean she isn't one at all. She told me when my dad went away, she'd now do what daddies do, So don't be so mean to her; we just want to enter that race for two. Well we entered that darn old race, and were laughing and having fun, It wasn't until we heard all the cheering, that we realized we had won! To all the single Moms out there, "Happy Father's Day" to each of you, I know you do a best job you can, bless you for being two good parents too. I for one know that a single parent can supply all a child needs in this world to be all that they can possibly be or become. You WILL be proud of a job well done one day, I know I was. Carpe' Diem, Mysteria |

A beautiful write for all single moms who managed to play both roles, mom and dad. Sharon, I can just see you in that race! What a great son. No way will he ever let you down. ![]() |

This poem reminds me of my mom, alot. She spent quite a bit of her adult life as a single mother of six. Typing with misty eyes. Tracey. |

Oh this is fantastic and deserves Poem of the Week (at least) prize! You know where I live schools are not allowed to ask kids to make Father's Day or Mother's Day cards because there are so many single parent families out there. Of course they could improvise a little like you did here in your wonderful poem. Loved it Mysteria and greetings to you from a single mum and single grandma ! Heart2Heart |

I enjoyed all your comments but Heart2heart, that comment sure made me sad, things are changing so much in schools now. No prayers, no peanut butter, now now cards? I have to wonder how my son even survived? ![]() That was a true story by the way, we still laugh about it. Thank you. |

Loved this poem Sharon, loved the story, and most of all, loved knowing that it's a true story. Your son is one lucky guy. He got the best of both worlds with you. ![]() Best wishes and Happy Father's Day to you! /Kit |

Yo dear Mysteria, I can picture the card I would have made for my father at school for fathers day: "Dear Dad, Thanks for not being around." Love Bobby--A no card type person |

Dear Sharon, that really blew me away, That was not only a delight to read but tells a lot about the sort of people you and your fine son are. It's no wonder you felt proud of him, I felt proud of him to, just by reading this very poignant poem. But there again how could he not be a wonderful son with a mother like you. Thanks so much for sharing this heart touching poem with us all, Love. Lindsay |

I'm so glad that this poem came back up so that I could read it, Sharon. It is indeed special, but not as special as you are. Just ask your son. ![]() |

Mysteria I have not been around and so missed this one. I love it. I always send this type of poem to my daughter who also brought up a wonderful son. She was at every baseball game, and always there for him. His dad died when he was twelve. Why do schools always do this with no empathy. latearrival |
