A meadow of goldenrod
has come undone beneath the sun
leaning into the autumn wind.
The arbor through the garden weighs heavy
with the floral scent of lavender and sage.

Growing wild behind an abandoned wine cellar
rows of grapevines have been cut back
to accommodate the change of season.
Over the hill an old oak tree holds her ground
where an eagles nest lies in wait
anticipating winters frost.

Crab apples have fallen freely
and strawberry fields have flourished
The summer has born her fruit
like sweet cream lingers
between the folds of a garden bed.

The leaves on the trees are falling
standing still among the willows and rosewoods.
And there is always something there to remind me
after the earth had been turned
silent in the night.

Bluesy - your thoughts are of a fading autumn, which brings winters cold. But too be warm until a blanket in front of the fireplace is sweet. Vivid pictures I see when I read this writing...

This is a neat poem. I miss poems about the simple things.

"rows of grapevines have been cut back

That's life, isn't it Bluesy?  So many things get cut back if not pulled out to make way for change.  If only we could know in advance though like we do when it comes to seasons.  We're going into summer here now but I still enjoyed your poem very much.

Virtually every line is an autumnal treasure.

~ A unique and delicately 'seasoned' fall poem. A pleasure to read ~ and experience.

Those of you who read me have encouraged me so much over the years.
I don't think I can fully express what your kindness means to me.
Your sensitive and compassionate replies touch me time and again.
It has been an honor to share these blue pages with you,
and I thank you always for the gift of your poetic friendships.

Warm hugs~

a most wonderful 'change of seasons' write!

"A meadow of goldenrod

leaning into the autumn wind."   ...

grand-fine imagery throughout!

most serious and long-sustained applause for this 'penning' !!

Dear Lori you have written a beautiful word picture about my favourite season of the

year, Autumn. A time  of near perfect weather and all the magnificent colours of

the leaves that are a highlight to everyone who enjoys nature at its finest. Your poem was a delight to read. Loved it and you.
