THE TEACHER
30 October 1999

In untamed but ordered thought
I, yet again, wrap my excitement
for these
and those
and them
in chosen paper
and blending ribbons.
Some thank their great-aunt for the handkerchiefs,
some are too busy to wonder at its shape
and others were expecting their first car.
But if there is even one
who spontaneously
tears open the parcel
to see if her gift can fly,
the price
is not too high.

No... it isn't. *S* This is especially good for me to read today after some of my own gift-giving plans have been questioned. *S* Thank you! *S*

Questioned?  What a horrible thing to happen to you, Ruth!  How hurtful!  Those that behaved like that are not worthy of you, so don't let them upset you.  When things like that happen, just come to Pip where everybody loves you - which is what you did!  I am glad my poem helped you to feel better.

However, my gift to my (ex-)pupils in this poem was my heart and soul I put into my teaching, and not a tangible gift.

I can't imagine a more beautiful gift than your heart and soul, sweet lady. *S*

I am one of those who never knows
what a package might contain;
my senses never seem to apply to
my wishes...

just to everyone else.

This is wonderful, and I am so glad to read you again!

Dear Diana, this is so you! How fortunate were those students to have you as their teacher!
The essence of this wonderful poem should be engraved in every student's heart, for they often don't realize how great the teacher's gift is.

So good to find you posting again.

Love,
Margherita

Dear Diana, I wish all of my teachers had been like you! ~ The ones that were, were my absolute favourites and I have never forgotten them.

I will show this touching, heartfelt poem to my daughter who is a teacher. She will be able to completely identify with your beautifully expressed words.

With much love ~ and respect, dear Wise One,

Linda

I too am a teacher and many times I do wish that I would be better understood by my pupils but then I set aside my thought as this is a profession I love.

I am very moved by these wonderful responses.

Ruth, thank you for your kind words (again! - smiles)!

Thank you, Karilea.  I’m glad to be back, but I don’t know for how long as things are pretty pressured and stressful at the moment.

Thank you, Margherita.  It is heart-breaking that some pupils don’t realise what they are getting at the time and don't take the full benefit, but it is all worth it when some really are open to receiving all teachers give them.

Thank you, Linda.  Yes, I remember my many wonderful teachers too.  I hope your daughter enjoys it.  I believe she will be able to identify with the poem.

You make me want to make wings out of paper and ribbon and fly.  Maybe I could tie a string to my ankle so I could be pulled back to earth when it is time to get my head out of the clouds.

That is the gift that you give me - imagintion wrapped up in love.
