Two A.M. (from Boyhood Tales) Two a.m. I'm up – still up, I should say, because 'up' portends you've been down under covers, snuggly, warm – asleep, and that I haven't been today, tonight. Seventeen was a big day, larger than life in many ways, profoundly changing, forever transforming, if only cosmetically seen because the boy is still a boy, only inside is he becoming a man. I'm up – still up, because only now has the profundity of what I've done hit home. . . I joined the Navy today. ©wesley james beard, jr. september 2009 |

Oh, Jimmy!! That concluding line gave me such a shiver!! You rendered the change in your life with incredible power. Such a decision at that age, what a reason to be up at two a.m.!!! Love your boyhood tales very much! Love, Margherita |

I love these little boyhood slices of your life. When I was a kid it seemed I had my whole life in front of me, and yet I went from here to there in record breaking time. (25 years later) Life is a precious gift, and I'm on the backside of it and just not sure how it happened so fast. |

Hi, Jimmy! It's nice to have you back gifting us with another boyhood memory! That was a big decision to join the navy at that age! I hope the Navy was good to you! Giving you a big, warm hug and a broad smile, Linda |

Big decisions for a young boy of 17 at the time and massive changes to pattern of life no doubt. Loved sharing your poetic narration and life's experiences. Heart2Heart |

Thank you for this timely piece. In less than two weeks, my daughter graduates from US Coast Guard basic and will head to Oregon coast to work at small boat station (Tillamook Bay, ie sea rescues and coastal law enforcement.) I am moving back to Oregon as well. (thanks for reading my poem) |
