She said never forget my eyes
As she touched his small shoulders
While his hair shrugged between her hands.

He winced and curled
As the train took her away;
To another world,
An eastern side that
Catered to sharp green trees
And stores that elbowed the Red Sea.

His feet fidgeted as she left,
Hands tied together in a knot
And he listened for her voice one last time,
Around the brown, narrow halls of their familyÕs home

But she was gone.
And so were the winter lunches
Where lunch was served on a hot plate,
Between the neighboring trees and tracks
That ran up to their front doorstep.

He had always loved her,
Felt her pain when she was tearing her hair out,
Crying so hard, he remembered the doorway creak open,
And every night he listened,
And every night he loved her still.

Loved her fight
beyond her tears and skin,
and she became a woman,
a woman traveling towards redemption.
