We called him naught but “Cookie”… For trail cook was his trade. And feather-light the biscuits That this old timer made. The smell of cow-camp coffee, Would rouse us from our rest… Our spread was not short-handed, For old Cookie was the best. His red beans were delicious- His bear sign were sublime. He’d cook the toughest cut of meat, And make it taste just fine. And bake? Why I just reckon! The secrets that he knew… Would keep us full and happy, A most contented crew. Then one day something happened- That seemed to rub him wrong. We woke to a cold camp fire. The wagon cook was gone. Old Shorty was appointed- To make the best of it. He might have been a cowboy, But he couldn’t cook a bit. I guess he made an effort- But the hands all threw a fit… And sure enough, on payday- The cowboys up and quit. |

I guess you made everyone too hungry to reply. I am craving biscuits now. Thanks a lot for that one! What is bear sign -- other than the obvious. I am wracking my brain trying to figure out what it is. Sausage and gravy (ewwww)? Loved this. Alison |

"Bear sign" was the cowboy term for doughnuts. |

Well, I guess we now know what is important to a cowboy and who's really in charge on the trail. Ida |

A very nice little story. A campfire, beans, sun setting in the west, brilliant sunset, hard ground to sleep on. Sounds like fun!!! |

I don't think you got enough comments for this fine poem. I'm sending it back up to the top of the list. |

He's one of the most under-commented, over-looked poets on this site. And one of my favorites. A |

One of my favorites too, Alison, and you are right, one of the most under rated poets on the site. Ida |
